Description

Sarah Edna Rebecca Zigler, “Sadie” (1882-1922) was born into a family belonging to the often-misunderstood conservative peace and antislavery sect, The Church of the Brethren, and lived in a time when women had few choices.

At five years old, she meets her first mentor, John S. Flory, who inspires her to dreams of college, a career, and to reaching her full potential. Fifteen years her senior, his presence throughout her life is a force of both support and love. Her compassionate character is formed by duty to a loving family which takes in traveling pastors, tramps, and gypsies. Her devotion to raising her frail younger brother Robert (M. R. Zigler, 1891-1985) brings her great joy, yet alters her plans for her own future. Along with responsibilities comes sacrifice, but in spite of the many obstacles she faces, Sadie develops into a talented, well-read, and outspoken woman.

Now, a wife and mother of six young children, she faces an undetermined diagnosis and an uncertain future. Sadie reflects on her short life of forty years and ponders the many sacrifices she has made associated with her faith journey and loyalty to family. She asks herself whether these choices were worth the price she has paid.

Sadie’s journey is interrupted at every turn, yet, throughout her life, she maintains her courage and tenacity, her intellectual curiosity, and a passion for the underdog.

Libby Layne’s engaging style combines truth and fiction and reflects a way of life in another time. Thought-provoking look at the strong but silent women in our past. Thank you for giving Sadie a voice! – Ms. Susan Kidd, Sadie’s Granddaughter, Brethren & Mennonite Heritage Center Board of Directors
