Golden Anniversary for the Great Mountain Yonder: Massanutten Village at 50

A famous American poet, a post-Civil War era hotel and health spa, and world-famous cycling tour have each called Massanutten home. Now celebrating its golden anniversary since incorporation, Massanutten Property Owners Association (MPOA) reflects upon the dream presented to the greater community that enticed many vacationers and snow sports enthusiasts to take the plunge on this nascent resort.
The formation of this unique community has been chronicled by former Massanutten resident June Brinkman in her book Massanutten: Twenty Years of History…and More. Ms. Brinkman will share from her book and accounts of being one of the initial “homesteader” residents in the early days of the community. MPOA Administrator and Rocktown History Trustee Bradford Dyjak will moderate this evening of Massanutten memories.
About June Brinkman
Calling the Shenandoah Valley home while completing her college degree, June Brinkman set down firm roots raising a family of three children at the fledgling, and, at that time, somewhat controversial, Massanutten Resort in 1979.
As the community grew, her involvement extended to a position on the property owner’s Architectural & Ecological Control Committee, promoting the service-oriented Women’s Club, establishing the Rockingham Spring Arboretum, writing for the local newspaper, part-time work in the ski area, and finally working full time for the Resort as Marketing & Public Relations Director. A long series of articles she wrote for the local paper evolved into this book covering the first 20 years of Massanutten’s development, 1971-1991.
Life took her elsewhere in 2000, but she still calls Massanutten home with many amazing friends and family still there, as she relocates to nearby Keezletown.
